Wearing braces means your teeth will shift during treatment to give you the healthy, aligned smile you desire. Braces are oral appliances which are strong and effective, but they aren’t indestructible. You can unintentionally damage your braces and delay your treatment time if you are not mindful. Today, our orthodontist, Dr. Maynard Davenport would like to share three strategies for protecting your smile in braces.
Today, our orthodontist, Dr. Maynard Davenport is happy to share three strategies for protecting your smile in braces.
#1 To ensure a healthy smile while you align it means brushing and flossing to remove bacteria and food particles which can become trapped in the appliance. If this oral debris is not removed daily, it can harm your smile by inviting tooth decay and gum disease. Always clean your smile after eating with braces!
#2 To protect your braces, avoid eating those foods which can damage your oral appliance. You probably already know what these foods are, namely, toffee, caramel, gum, popcorn, along with any other sticky or hard foods which risk damaging and breaking your hardware.
#3 You can also protect your braces when you eat by chewing with your molars. If you bite into foods using your front teeth, you can accidentally pull the brackets off of your teeth and damage the wire. You can easily prevent this from happening by cutting your food into smaller pieces and chewing with your molars in the back of the mouth. Your molars are designed to effectively chew your food.
Keeping your mouth and your braces safe isn’t hard, it just takes mindfulness.
