Do you have braces? If so, you should do everything you can to keep tooth decay at bay. Tooth decay, which is also known as a cavity, can severely harm your teeth and smile and can also complicate the orthodontic journey. So, it’s best to do everything you can to keep your smile free from cavities. To help you do so, our orthodontist, Dr. Maynard Davenport, encourages you to do the following things:
-Focus on brushing: Scrub your smile with a soft-bristled toothbrush for two minutes each time. It’s strongly recommended to brush at least twice a day, but if you can brush after each meal and snack, do it. Make sure to tilt the brush as you scrub so you can clean under the braces wires and around the braces brackets.
-Focus on flossing: Flossing is vital when preventing cavities. This is because it removes the bacteria from between the teeth and helps you prevent cavities in those crevices. So, make sure to floss at least once a day. If you can floss more often, like after you brush, do it.
-Visit your dentist: Your routine dental cleaning and exam appointments are very helpful when preventing cavities, especially because the cleaning treatment removes cavity-causing bacteria from the smile and the fluoride treatment strengthens the tooth enamel. So, make sure to attend your checkups every six months.
